Historical Background of Auroa
1.0 Estimated timeframe: 1500-1600.
Area Hapu Boundary of Ngati Haua Piko: From the Mountain – to Auroa & surrounding areas – to the Sea. Rama, Auroa, Taikatu, Omuturangi Roads are ancestral area of Ngati Haua Piko hapu.
1.1 Auroa ancestral lineage is from the Takitimu waka. Auroa is the tupuna to Tuhaereao who marriedHinekoropanga eldest sister to Manuhiakai. Manuhiakai is the ancestor of the Hapu o Manuhiakai situated in the region of Okaiawa, in the iwi o Ngaruahinerangi.
1.2 According to tribal passage of information Auroa was on his way to visit relations ii Rangitane iwi – situated in the Manawatu region -with his travelling entourage’. The journey took in the crossing of the Whanganui River. It is known Auroa was a skilled tribesman, sportsman, known for long distant swimming, competitive from a long lineage of chieftainship.
1.3 Arriving on the banks of the Whanganui River Auroa decided to make camp with intentions to stay awhile – resting the party & horses. Food gathering was a large part of daily activities collecting from the surrounding bush-land and waterways to the sea.
1.4 It was in this setting Hinengakau caught the attention of Auroa, in the many ways he went about taking care of his party, and the leisure activities his entourage’ gave themselves. During Auroa stay it was not long before displays of interest saw Hinengakau asked her father to seek Auroa hand in marriage.
1.5 Tamakehu, Hinengakau father is the great grandson of Te Mananui-a-Paihau. Tamakehu married Ruaka is a descendant of Ruaputahaanga Ancestress of standing who belong.to Nga Rauru, Ngati Ruanui, Ngaruahinerangi the region of South Taranaki. Ruaputahaanga ancestral bastion site stood where the Hawera Hospital is today. It was named Te Ramanui.
1.6 Tamakehu & Ruaka is the parents of Tama-upoko, Hinengakau & Tupoho.
1.7 Auroa married Hinengakau – the Arikinui of Te Atihaunui-a-papa-rangi situated on the Awa o Whanganui. Auroa & Hinengakau geneology are ancestrally connected to South Taranaki by way of the ancestral waka Aotea Utanganui.
1.8 From the union came twins borne to the newly weds. The twins were named Ngati Haua Piko & Ngati Haua Roa.
1.9 Custom dictated newborne descendants of Chieftain Lines were gifted areas of land acknowledging their ancestral birthright.
1.10 Ngati Haua Roa maternal birthright traditional area is Taumaranui & surrounding area – on the Awa o Whanganui in the iwi o Te Atihaunui-a-papa-rangi. The area was named in honor of the newborn. Its descendants make up the whanau belonging to Ngati Haua Roa – related by blood to the ancestress of Hinengakau & Auroa
1.11 Ngati Haua Piko was gifted the paternal traditional area from the Mountain to the Sea; between Rama Road & Omuturangi Road in the Iwi of Ngaruahinerangi. The area was named in honor of the newborn. The placenta of the newborn was buried on the whenua mentioned.
1.12 The descendants make up the whanau hapu belonging to Ngati Haua Piko – related by blood to the ancestor of Auroa & Hinengakau. The descendants of Ngati Haua Piko remain on the lands today in Otakeho & the township of Auroa in remembrance of the ancestor.
1.13 When Auroa School opened; many of the descendants of Auroa from the hapu of Ngati Haua Piko attended the school.
